YWCA Durham and Y’s WISH Shelter – Starry Nights
Boyer Chevrolet Buick GMC is pleased to support and contribute to YWCA Durham and Y’s WISH Emergency Shelter. Our Auction Contribution, along with all the other generous contributions, helped to raise over $50,000 at their Starry Nights dinner, dance and auction,. All funds raised directly support women and children who are victims of violence. The ultimate goal being to end violence against women and children altogether.
On June 10, the YWCA Durham held their 13th Annual Starry Nights which is a fundraiser and celebration of the women and children of Y’s WISH Shelter. This fun-filled evening featured a delicious meal in the company of some of Durham’s most influential people, dancing, live auction, silent auction, their famous Balloon Pull and the launch of their 2016 Campaign Video. Starry Nights is YWCA Durham’s biggest event of the year and main fundraiser to generate funds to operate their shelter and many related services, and is a vital part of their sustainability.
YWCA is a not-for-profit charity that has supported all of Durham Region for the past 70 years. They provide support to abused women and children, including emergency shelter, longer term housing, counselling, advocacy and safety planning. Every year, their needs continue to grow. Currently, the Y’s WISH emergency shelter operates at over-capacity year round and had to turn away over 312 women and their children. Their long-term and outreach counselling program provide essential services to 140 women and their transitional counselling program provides support to another 216 women. Their 24/7 Crisis Line rang 832 times in 2015, receiving calls from women experiencing physical, sexual, emotional and financial abuse by intimate partners and family members. Unfortunately, one in 3 women in our community is affected by violence each day. These truly sad statistics clearly demonstrate that the services provided by YWCA Durham and Y’s WISH Shelter are vitally essential to our community. Y’s WISH stands for Women in Safe Housing. YWCA Durham is dedicated to building an inclusive community where women, children, youth and families are safe.
